January 27
When Exactly: Thursday Jan. 22 - 8 pm
Cultivar: Granny Smith
Purchased From: Union Market (Brooklyn, NY)
Size: Medium
Color: I don’t know, I’m colorblind.
Eaten How: Unadorned.
Review:
The reason why not.
Finally, the last apple from the Union Market batch.  Phew.  I’ve been hoping that buying organic would spare me the usual shortcomings of storebought fruit, but this was exactly the kind of apple that has made me afraid to buy Grannies for so long.  And I got to pay the organic price to boot.  Awesome.
This is my sixth straight poor apple, so I’ll keep this brief and try not to indulge in excessive fuming.  This fella was waxy and chewy like a styrofoam peanut.  It had the nameless acidity of a shriveled white grape and a frail strawberry sweetness that offered only a quantum of solace HA HA HA sigh.  The final two bites at the core hinted at a Granny-ish lime flavor that may have once existed at the fruit’s dawn, whenever that may have been.  It tasted a good couple of years old.
It felt good to throw this apple’s core out in the garbage can of a subway platform.  I need some better apples fast.
